Sterope Greek Mythología

Sterope

In Greek mythology, Sterope was one of the seven Pleiades, the daughters of Atlas and Pleione. She was also known as Asterope. The Pleiades were a group of beautiful nymphs who caught the attention of various gods and mortals.

Family

Sterope was the sister of Maia, Electra, Taygete, Celaeno, Alcyone, and Merope. Together, they formed the famous star cluster known as the Pleiades. Their mother, Pleione, was a sea-nymph, and their father, Atlas, was a Titan who held up the sky.

Mythology

According to myth, Sterope caught the eye of the god Ares, who fell in love with her beauty. However, she was already married to the giant Oenomaus. Despite this, Ares pursued Sterope, leading to a tumultuous love affair that caused jealousy and conflict among the gods.

Transformation into a Star

In some versions of the myth, Sterope and her sisters were pursued by the hunter Orion. To protect them, Zeus transformed the Pleiades into stars, placing them in the night sky where they would forever be safe from harm. The constellation of the Pleiades can still be seen today.

Sterope represents beauty, grace, and the enduring power of sisterhood. Her story serves as a reminder of the complexities of love and the protection offered by the divine.
