Mythology

Ganesha

Ganesha is one of the most widely worshipped deities in Hindu mythology. He is known as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom and intellect. Ganesha is easily recognizable by his elephant head and pot-bellied human body, symbolizing his unique and divine nature.

Birth of Ganesha

According to Hindu mythology, Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati out of sandalwood paste while she was bathing. She breathed life into the figure and placed him at the entrance to her chamber to guard her privacy. When Lord Shiva, Parvati's husband, tried to enter, Ganesha blocked his path. In a fit of rage, Shiva beheaded Ganesha.

The Elephant Head

To appease Parvati, Shiva promised to restore Ganesha's life. He sent his followers to bring back the head of the first living being they found, which happened to be an elephant. Shiva attached the elephant's head to Ganesha's body, bringing him back to life and making him the elephant-headed god we know today.

Symbols and Meanings

Ganesha is often depicted with four arms, each holding symbolic objects such as a broken tusk, a modak (sweet delicacy), a lotus, and an axe. His broken tusk symbolizes sacrifice and the idea that one must be willing to give up something to achieve their goals. The modak represents the sweetness of the rewards of spiritual practice.

Significance and Worship

Ganesha is revered as the god of beginnings and is worshipped before starting any new endeavor or undertaking. His blessings are sought to remove obstacles and ensure success in various endeavors. Ganesha's popularity extends beyond Hinduism and is widely recognized and respected in many cultures around the world.

In Hindu mythology, Ganesha holds a special place as a beloved and revered deity, embodying wisdom, intellect, and the ability to overcome obstacles with grace and perseverance.
